Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
Sports Trivia Game is a free daily sports trivia game run by WMI Ventures LLC, a company based in New York, USA ("we," "us," "our"). This policy explains what information is involved when you play Sports Trivia Game and what choices you have. Using Sports Trivia Game also means you agree to our Terms of Service.
2. Game data saved on your device
You can play Sports Trivia Game without an account, a sign-up, a name or an email address.
Your guesses, scores, game history, statistics and settings are saved in your own web browser, using a browser feature called local storage. The first time you play, the game also saves a random anonymous ID there. It is a string of letters and numbers that tells one browser apart from another. It is not your name, email address or anything else about you.
- When you finish a day, your guesses for that day, the date and your anonymous ID are sent to us, as explained in section 3. The rest of your game history, statistics and settings stay on your device.
- If you replay a past day, the replay is saved only on your device. It is not sent to us.
- The data on your device stays until you clear it. Clearing your browser's site data for Sports Trivia Game deletes all of it, including the anonymous ID, and you get a new ID the next time you play.
- "Reset today's progress" in the stats window clears the current day on your device. It does not remove a result that was already sent to us.
- If you use "Download my play record," the file is created on your device and saved where you choose. It is not sent to us.
- Playing in a private or incognito window, or switching browsers or devices, means your saved progress will not carry over.
3. Information we receive
Your daily results
When you finish a day's five questions, your browser sends us your guesses for each question, the date and your anonymous ID. We use them to:
- work out your score on our own server;
- show how you compare with other players, such as "You beat 72% of players" and "41% got this right."
We keep one result per browser per day. Other players only see totals and percentages, never anyone's single result. Results are not linked to a name, email address or account.
Technical records
When your browser loads the site, loads the day's questions, or sends a result, a question report or a Contact page message, the servers that run Sports Trivia Game automatically receive basic technical details, such as:
- your IP address (a number that identifies your internet connection and can show your rough location, like your city or region);
- your browser type, device type and operating system;
- the pages and files requested, the date and time, and the website that sent you here.
These records are used to deliver the site, keep it secure (for example, by blocking attacks and spam), fix problems and understand overall traffic.
Game analytics (PostHog)
To understand how the game is played and improve it, we use PostHog, a product analytics service run by PostHog, Inc., which stores our analytics data in the United States or the European Union. It runs on the game and the Contact page.
- No cookies. Analytics saves nothing in cookies or local storage. Each time a page loads, it counts as a new anonymous visit with a random ID that is kept only in your browser's memory and is gone when you leave or reload the page.
- What is sent. Anonymous game events, such as a question started or finished, whether a guess was right, close or far, the number of guesses used, the day's score, that the Share button was used, that the mini-games or a past day were opened, and that something failed to load. PostHog also adds standard page details: the page address and the website that sent you here (including any campaign tags in the link), how long the page was open and how far down it was scrolled, your browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language, time zone and user-agent (a short text your browser sends that names the browser and device).
- What is not sent. Your guesses or answers, the note in a question report, Contact page messages, your name or email address, or the anonymous ID saved for your game results. If you send a report or a message, analytics only records that one was sent. There are no session recordings, click tracking, heatmaps or user profiles.
- How it travels. Events go to our own server first, which passes them to PostHog along with your IP address so PostHog can estimate your rough location (such as your country or city). We have PostHog set to discard IP addresses, so the address itself is not stored with the events.
- Turning it off. Analytics does not run if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal. Turn either one on in your browser's privacy settings (or with a browser extension) to stop it.
Spam protection
To stop fake results, junk reports and spam messages, we use three checks:
- Human check (Cloudflare Turnstile). When your browser sends a result, a question report or a Contact page message, an invisible check from Cloudflare runs to tell real people from automated programs (bots). To do this, Turnstile looks at signals from your browser and device, such as your IP address and browser details. Most players never see it. If it cannot decide, it may show a small checkbox. Our server then confirms the check with Cloudflare and passes along your IP address as part of that. Cloudflare's use of this information is covered by the Cloudflare Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
- Network code. When you send a result, our server turns your IP address into a scrambled code using a secret key. The code is different every day, so it cannot link your results from one day to the next, and without our secret key it cannot be turned back into your IP address. We save the code with your result only to limit how many results one internet connection can add each day. Results over that limit are scored for you but not saved. Your IP address itself is never saved in our database.
- Request limits. Cloudflare counts the requests coming from each IP address and blocks any address that sends too many in a short time.
Messages you send us
The Contact page asks for your email address and a message. When you press Send, the human check and request limits described above run, and our server emails your message to our inbox, with your email address set as the reply-to address so we can answer you. The message is not saved in our database. You can also email us directly at hello@sportstriviagame.com. Either way, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use it only to reply and to improve the game.
Companies that help us run the site
- Cloudflare hosts the site. It receives visitors' IP addresses and request records to serve the site and protect it, runs the human check and request limits described above, and delivers question reports, Contact page messages and emails sent to hello@sportstriviagame.com to our email inbox (through Cloudflare Email Routing).
- Supabase hosts our database in the United States. The day's questions, daily results (including the network code described above) and question reports are stored there.
- Google (Gmail) hosts our email inbox. It stores the Contact page messages and emails you send us and the question reports emailed to us.
- PostHog provides our game analytics, as described above. It stores the analytics events in the United States or the European Union.
These companies handle this information to provide their services to us.
Sports Trivia Game loads its pixel font from Google Fonts. When it does, your browser connects to Google's servers, and Google receives your IP address and browser details. Google's use of that information is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
We do not ask for, and do not knowingly collect, sensitive information such as government ID numbers, financial account details, health information or precise location.
4. Sharing scores and reporting questions
The Share button creates a short summary of your score. Depending on your device, it opens your device's share menu or copies the summary to your clipboard. You decide where it goes. We do not receive it, but any app or person you share it with will.
The "Report this question" button opens a short form that shows the question. When you press Send, the human check described in section 3 runs, and your note, the question it is about and the date are sent to our server. We save the report in our database, and a copy is emailed to us. We use reports only to check and fix questions.
The form does not ask for your name or email address, so please leave personal details out of your note. If you would like a reply, use the Contact page instead.
5. Advertising (Google AdSense)
Sports Trivia Game is free to play. To pay for it, we plan to show ads provided by Google AdSense. Once ads are live:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to Sports Trivia Game and to other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies lets Google and its partners serve ads to you based on your visits to Sports Trivia Game and/or other sites on the internet.
- Google and its partners may collect your IP address, device and browser details, cookie and device identifiers, and information about the ads you see and click. They use this to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure how ads perform and prevent fraud.
- Other ad companies that work with Google may also place cookies or use similar tools on Sports Trivia Game to show and measure ads.
To learn how Google uses information from sites that show its ads, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. You can see Google's list of ad partners and how to control ads in the Google advertising page.
We do not sell your information to anyone for money. Under some U.S. state laws, letting ad companies use cookies to show you ads based on your activity across different websites counts as "selling" or "sharing" personal information. Section 9 explains how to opt out.
6. Cookies and similar tools
A cookie is a small text file a website saves in your browser so it can recognize your browser later. Similar tools include local storage and device identifiers. On Sports Trivia Game:
- Local storage (needed for the game). Saves your progress, settings and anonymous ID on your device, as described in section 2.
- Security tools (set by Cloudflare). Cloudflare's human check and bot protection may save small cookies or similar data in your browser to tell people from bots. They are needed to keep the site secure.
- Analytics (no cookies). Our PostHog analytics saves nothing in cookies or local storage, as described in section 3.
- Advertising cookies (once ads are live). Set by Google and its partners to show and measure ads, as described in section 5.
Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. If you block local storage, the game still works, but your progress will not be saved.
7. Your ad choices
- Turn off personalized ads from Google in Google Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com).
- Opt out of personalized ads from many other ad companies at www.aboutads.info.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
If you opt out, you will still see ads. They will just be less tailored to your interests.
8. Visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland
If you visit from the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom or Switzerland, then once ads are live we will ask for your consent through a consent tool before advertising cookies or personalized ads are used. You can change your choice at any time through the same tool.
Our legal reasons for using information are:
- Your consent for advertising cookies and personalized ads;
- Our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving the site (for example, basic server records, blocking spam and bots, scoring daily results, showing how players compare, cookieless game analytics, fixing reported questions and answering your messages);
- Storage needed for the service you asked for, such as saving your game progress on your device.
You may have the right to see, correct, delete or move the personal information we hold about you, to limit or object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. Information may be processed in the United States and other countries where we and our service providers operate. Where the law requires it, those transfers are protected by approved safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses.
To use any of these rights, contact us at hello@sportstriviagame.com.
9. Privacy rights in U.S. states
Depending on where you live, state laws, including California's privacy laws (the CCPA as amended by the CPRA) and similar laws in states such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Oregon and Texas, may give you rights over your personal information.
What we collect and why
The kinds of personal information involved in Sports Trivia Game, including once ads are live, are:
- Identifiers: IP address, the daily scrambled code made from your IP address, the anonymous ID saved in your browser, the random visit ID analytics keeps in memory while a page is open, cookie IDs and device identifiers.
- Internet activity: pages visited, the website that sent you here, how you interact with the site (including the anonymous game events our analytics records) and with ads, and the browser and device signals used by the human check and by analytics.
- Game activity: your guesses for each day you finish and the scores we work out from them.
- Approximate location: your rough area, worked out from your IP address, including by PostHog before it discards the address.
- What you send us: your email address and message, if you use the Contact page or email us, and the note in any question report.
This information comes from you and your device. It is used to run and secure the site, block spam and bots, score daily results, show how players compare, fix reported questions, answer your messages, understand traffic and how the game is played, improve the game and show ads. It is disclosed to the companies that help us run the site (Cloudflare, Supabase, Google as our email provider and PostHog as our analytics provider) and, once ads are live, to Google and its advertising partners. We do not collect sensitive personal information as defined by these laws.
Your rights
- Know what personal information we have about you and get a copy.
- Ask us to correct or delete it.
- Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information, including for targeted advertising.
- Not be treated differently for using these rights.
Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information
You can opt out in any of these ways:
- Turn on Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser or with a browser extension. Once ads are live, we will treat a GPC signal as a request to opt out for that browser.
- Use the privacy choices link that will appear at the bottom of the game once ads are live.
- Email us at hello@sportstriviagame.com with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share."
How to make a request
Email hello@sportstriviagame.com. Because we do not have accounts, we may ask for details that help us find information linked to your browser or device. You may let an authorized agent make a request for you. If we turn down your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision, and we will answer as required by your state's law.
10. Children
Sports Trivia Game is a general-audience game. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, in line with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has sent us personal information, contact us at hello@sportstriviagame.com and we will delete it.
11. How long information is kept
- Game data on your device: until you clear it.
- Daily results (guesses, scores, date and anonymous ID): for as long as Sports Trivia Game runs, so the player comparisons for past days stay correct. If you clear your browser's site data, the results already sent stay with us but can no longer be linked to your browser.
- Network codes (the scrambled daily code saved with a result): erased about 2 days after the result is sent.
- Question reports (the saved report and the emailed copy): up to 2 years, then deleted.
- Server records: only as long as needed to run, secure and improve the site, and then deleted or kept only in a form that no longer identifies you.
- Analytics events (kept by PostHog): as long as needed to understand and improve the game, then deleted.
- Contact page messages and emails you send us: kept in our email inbox as long as needed to answer you, then deleted within 2 years.
- Information collected by Google and its partners: kept under their own policies.
12. Security
Sports Trivia Game is served over a secure, encrypted connection (HTTPS), and we keep the information we receive to a minimum. No website can be made completely secure, so we cannot promise that information will never be accessed without permission.
13. Links to other websites
Answers in Sports Trivia Game link to outside sources, such as sports statistics sites, news outlets and league websites. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for what they collect or how they use it.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy, for example when ads go live or the law changes. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top. If a change is significant, we will give a clear notice on the site.
